Before Your IPL Treatment
Avoid tanning and significant sun exposure for 2–4 weeks before treatment, following your provider's instructions.
Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup, perfume and skincare products on the treatment area.
Avoid waxing, plucking or other hair-removal methods that remove the hair root in the treatment area. Shave only if instructed.
Tell your provider about medications, recent treatments, active skin conditions and any history of cold sores or photosensitivity.
Ask your provider when to pause retinoids, glycolic acid, exfoliants, vitamin C or other potentially irritating skincare products. The timing depends on the product and your skin.
Your provider should assess your skin type, recent sun exposure and suitability for IPL before treatment.
After Your IPL Treatment
Apply a gentle moisturizer and broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 sunscreen daily.
Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning while the skin recovers.
For 24–48 hours, or as directed, avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and other sources of excessive heat.
Avoid scrubs, exfoliating acids, retinoids and other irritating products until your skin has recovered and your provider says they can be resumed.
Do not pick or scrub treated areas.
Contact your provider if you develop blistering, significant pain, worsening swelling or other unexpected reactions.
